Great news as #SmartBalbriggan has been shortlisted for a Digital Town Award in the Education category this year, a fantastic achievement!
In October of last year, Smart Balbriggan ran a TY Challenge throughout participating secondary schools of Balbriggan, including Ardgillan Community School, Bremore Educate Together Secondary School and Coláiste Ghlór na Mara. A total of 97 Transition Year students were involved in a series of workshops, held in collaboration with The Academy of the near Future and What the Hack.
During these workshops, the students learned about how new technology and innovation can improve their community. They developed their own creative ideas to tackle the local issues of Balbriggan and finally, ‘pitched’ their ideas to a panel of judges with a prize for the best concept!
The winning team were from Coláiste Ghlór na Mara and their concept was called ‘Food Waste’. The solution created by the students looked at tackling food waste, with the development of a platform that could educate people about food waste and meal preparation, and in turn, could prompt people to make changes to their food consumption habits!
Students from the winning team were Alisha Ní Riain, Ruaidhrí Ó Baoill, Cathal Mac Aoidh and Síofra Nic Mánais.
Well done to everyone involved, a fantastic initiative alongside Fingal County Council. Be sure to register to attend the event virtually on Wednesday 8th June at 4.00pm. The Awards Ceremony will run for one hour and you can register for the event here.
